1. Who is eligible to apply for the CF RIA program?

The Vertex CF Research Innovation Awards (CF RIA) support and inspire the next generation of researchers who are advancing the understanding of cystic fibrosis.

2. Will I need a mentor to oversee the proposed project?

For the mentored research award, applicants must have the support of a mentor with an established career within CF, who is committed to act in an advisory role and provide oversight for the project. The mentor must ensure the applicant is given appropriate time to complete their research. You will also need a letter from your division chief or department head confirming your academic appointment and the provision of protected time to complete your CF RIA project.


3. How will the proposals be assessed?

Applications will be evaluated by the steering committee against the following selection criteria:

A. Quality of proposal
B. Ability of principal investigator to deliver the project
C. Impact of the project on the understanding/treatment of CF


4. How much funding is available?

  • Independent research award: Up to 2 grants of $750,000 are available to newly independent researchers conducting a 3-year research project
  • Mentored research award: Up to 4 grants of $125,000 are available to junior investigators conductinga
    2-year research project

Funding will be based on a detailed budget review.

 

5. How do I submit an application?

Applicants should first download and complete the relevant letter of intent application form from the website. Submissions should also include a biosketch of the lead investigator, a cover letter of support, and for mentored applications you will also need a biosketch and letter of support from your mentor, as well as a letter from the division chief or department head confirming your academic appointment and protected time.

6. When will I hear if my letter of intent/full application proposal has been accepted for an award?

All letter of intent applications received by the deadline date will be assessed by the steering committee. All applicants will be notified via email, by 14 February 2018, as to whether or not they have been invited to submit a full application.

If you are successful in being invited to submit a full application, the deadline for full applications is 14 March 2018. Full applications will be assessed by the steering committee and final award decisions will be sent via email by 27 April 2018.


7. How often will I need to submit written progress reports?

Written progress reports will be expected by the Steering Committee 6 months from the start of the project and then at agreed 6-month intervals. In addition, the mentor (as applicable) will also be required to provide a brief written progress report at agreed 6-month intervals.
