1. Who is eligible to apply for the CF RIA program?
Junior investigators with a demonstrated career interest in CF, who are currently affiliated with a university or research institute in the United States and Canada, are eligible to apply.
Click here for additional eligibility criteria.
2. Will I need a mentor to oversee the proposed project?
Applicants must have the support of a mentor with an established career within CF who is committed to act in an advisory and oversight role for the project. The mentor must also ensure the applicant is given appropriate time to complete their research. You will also need a letter from your Division Chief or Department Head confirming your academic appointment and protected time.
3. How will the proposals be assessed?
Applications will be evaluated by the Steering Committee against the following selection criteria:
Quality of the proposal
Ability of the PI to deliver the project
Impact of the project on understanding or treatment of CF
Click here for more information on the selection criteria.
4. I have received funding for a similar project, however this project does not specifically cover my proposal for the CF RIA program. Would I be eligible to apply for the CF RIA program?
Projects should generally have no existing funding. For projects awarded funding, additional funding for the specific research may only be accepted by the funding recipient where the funder agrees in writing that the CF RIA program funding stipulations, cited within the agreement between Vertex and the funding recipient/institution take pre-eminence over any similar claims they might attempt to assert. Click here for more information on funding.
5. If I am selected for an award, how much funding will I be given?
The Steering Committee will select up to 5 research projects for an award. Available funding is up to USD$125,000 per project. Funding will be based on a detailed budget review.
6. How do I begin the submission process?
Applicants should first download and complete the appropriate submission form and budget template. Submissions should also include your CV, a letter of support from your mentor, your mentor’s bio sketch and a letter from the Division Chief or Department Head confirming academic appointment and protected time.

The submission deadline for applications is January 9, 2017.

7. How and when will I hear if my proposal has been accepted for an award?
Applicants selected by the Steering Committee will be notified via email. Notification will be sent by March 30, 2017.
8. How often will I need to submit written progress reports?
Written progress reports will be expected by the Steering Committee 6 months from the start of the project and then at agreed 6-month intervals. In addition, the mentor will also be required to provide a brief written progress report at agreed 6-month intervals.
